World of Warships Japanese pre dreadnaught Mikasa
The pre dreadnaught Mikasa was part of the new post-war programme of 1896-97 for the Imperial Japanese Navy. The ship was launched in 8 November 1900 and completed 1 March 1902. It was a modified version of Formidable class battleships of Royal Navy. It was made in harvey-nickel steel and was heavily armored (Krupp cemented armor): belt from 4in to 9in, barbettes from 6in to 14in, turrets from 8in to 10in, casemattes 6in. Mikasa was powered by two vertical triple-expansion steam engines, using steam generated by 25 Belleville boilers (15000hp with a top speed of 18.45 knots. The main armament consisted in four Elswick Ordnance Company 40 calibre 12in guns mounted in twin gun turrets / barbettes (placed fore and aft of the superstructure). The secondary armament consisted in 14 45-calibre 6-inch (152mm) quick firing guns in casemates. Mikasa was also armed with 4 submerged 18 inch torpedo tubes. The effective range was 7.300 metres by four Bass & Stroud FA£ coincidence rangefinders and 24 power magnification telescopic gunsights.
Mikasa sank during the Russo-Japanese war near Sasebo. However she was raised in 7 August 1906 and repaired. In 1906/7, Mikasa was to have been rebuilt to the “Iwani”, armed with 12in 45-cal and 14x6in 45-cal guns. The project was erased. In 1921 the ship re-entered in service as 1st Class coast-defence ship. On 17 September 1921 Mikasa ran aground near Vladivostok. It was refloated only on 20 September 1923 and on 12 November 1926 it became a memorial by Hirohito and Admiral Togo at Yokosuka. Mikasa survived until our days.
