French government, after the end of AMX 30 production, searched a new partnership with a foreign state was sought to develop, limiting unit cost, a new MBT, codename “Leclerc”. The partnership was found when the UAE ordered 436 vehicles of the future tank, adding to the 426 units already planned for the French Army.
In 1986, the project was started under the name “Leclerc”, and six prototypes were swiftly built. Five of the six prototypes were designated with a different name and ARES was the first prototype tank.
