“Operation Frühlingserwachen (“Spring Awakening”) (6 – 16 March 1945) was the last major German offensive of World War II. The offensive was launched in Hungary on the Eastern Front. This offensive was also known in German as the Plattensee Offensive, in Russian as the Balaton Defensive Operation (6 – 15 March 1945), and in English as the Lake Balaton Offensive. The offensive was launched by the Germans in great secrecy on 6 March 1945. The German attacks were centered in the Lake Balaton area. This area included some of the last oil reserves still available to the Germans. Operation Spring Awakening involved many German units withdrawn from the failed Ardennes Offensive on the Western Front including the Sixth SS Panzer Army.”
L’Operazione Frühlingserwachen (“Spring Awakening”) (6-16 Marzo 1945) è stata l’ultima grande offensiva tedesca della Seconda Guerra Mondiale. L’offensiva è stata lanciata in Ungheria sul fronte orientale. Questa offensiva era anche nota in tedesco come Offensive Plattensee, in russo come Operazione Difensiva Balaton (6-15 marzo 1945), e in inglese come Lake Balaton Offensive. L’offensiva è stata lanciata dai tedeschi in gran segreto il 6 marzo 1945. Gli attacchi tedeschi si sono concentrate nella zona del Lago Balaton. Questa zona comprendeva alcune delle ultime riserve di petrolio ancora disponibili ai tedeschi. L’Operazione Spring Awakening coinvolse molte unità tedesche ritirate dalla fallita offensiva delle Ardenne sul Fronte Occidentale compreso il Sesto SS Panzer Army.
