Main Battle Tank Vickers Mk. 3
The Vickers MBT Mk 3 is a main battle tank developed by the British company Vickers-Armstrongs in the 1970s for the export market. It was a simple, low-cost, but effective tank, armed with a 105 mm L7A2 rifled gun and protected by a well-shaped cast turret and welded steel armor.
The first production order for Mk. 3 tanks was placed in 1977 by the Government of Kenya, which ordered 76 tanks and 7 armored recovery vehicles. [^1^][1] [^2^][2] The tanks were built at the Vickers Scotswood factory in Newcastle between 1977 and 1981. [^2^][2] The Kenyan tanks saw action in the Somali Civil War and the Operation Linda Nchi, the Kenyan intervention in Somalia in 2021.
In 1981, after five years of negotiations, Vickers signed a contract to provide 108 Mk. 3N “Eagle” tanks, 15 armored vehicle-launched bridges and 18 armored recovery vehicles to the Nigerian Army. The Mk. 3N was a modified version of the Mk. 3, with improved fire control system, communication equipment, and engine cooling system. Nigeria also ordered 64 more Mk. 3s in 1990. The Nigerian tanks were involved in the Boko Haram insurgency and some of them were captured and later re-captured by the Nigerian Army.
